Yr11 Studio Arts - Photography
“In Unit 2 Studio Arts, our first practical topic was related to the appropriation of images. As a class, we had to choose an artwork to imitate or parody. Mine was based on a black and white photograph by Phillipe Halsmann, called “Dali Atomicus” that showed the Surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, jumping up in the air. For the photo-shoot, I began by setting up the backdrop and studio lighting, which was a bit difficult. However, it let me experience how professional photographers work. As I began to take the photos, I actually had to stand on the table to get in all the details.”

Students have been exploring different techniques, concepts and facets of photography in VCE Studio Arts. The latest task involved looking aspects of commercial photography, including food, fashion and product promotion. Objects were placed on a lightbox or against a selected backdrop, whilst models were directed into different poses, often under studio lights. The classroom buzzed with creative energy. It was clear how engaged the students were and this will hopefully continue into the future.
