Year 7 Boys Basketball
The Year 7 Boys Basketball team produced a fantastic result in their first round of the competition two months ago, winning the district outright. This meant that they had qualified for the Western Metropolitan Regional Competition, which was played on Monday the 24th of October.
The boys travelled with the Year 7 Girls Basketball team who had also won the district competition, all the way to Altona Stadium, in what I can only describe as the best behaved bus trip I have ever witnessed. There was a clear tension in the air as to how the upcoming games would go.
We had an odd start to the competition, with our first opponents showing up twenty minutes late due to a mechanical issue with their bus. The rules dictated because of this that our team was to be awarded 20 points, and that the game would only last the single half. The game ended in our favour, with a victory for our boys even if you discounted the 20-point advantage awarded to us.
In game 2 we played Maribyrnong Sports Academy, which we knew would be a tough game. They were a very strong team and won convincingly. MSA went on to win the regional competition.
By Game 3 the boys were pretty dejected. They had only been able to play half a game of good basketball all day, and had been virtually knocked out of the competition by a school purely dedicated to sports. The boys didn’t play their best basketball because of this and lost by 3 points, as a final 3-point buzzer beater attempt sadly missed, failing to tie up the game.
Despite the turbulent day, the boys all appeared to have fun and were excited for next year’s competition. The boys gave it their best and did Strathmore extremely proud. Great effort, boys.
Thanks to Milly Andrews who took on the score keeping duties for the team, and to Hunter Newton, who despite injury was able to participate as the assistant coach for the day.
