Hockey – Western Metro Region Finals
There were 6 teams qualified for the WMR Intermediate Boys Finals at Footscray Hockey club on Thursday 2 November. Our pool of 3 teams included Suzanne Corey Secondary College and Creekside College.
Round one saw a tight and keenly contested game against Suzanne Corey Secondary College with a congested midfield and forward half difficult to navigate. After a couple of Paul Dounas strikes rebounding from the post, Geordie Hollis scored our solitary goal to get the win.
Round two against Creekside was a more open game with our half backs controlling the mid field and giving the forwards plenty of opportunities. Paul converted two of our first half short corners and Luke Ganino netted two from close range to make his mark from the wing. Geordie converted another in the second half for a 5/0 win.
The final saw our traditional rivals Maribyrnong Sports Academy put the boys under heaps of pressure with direct attacking hockey to strike two quick goals and establish control of the game. Our backs tried hard but when able to win some contests near the “D”, couldn’t penetrate the midfield to put our wings and forwards in scoring positions. Paul, Rom Marwick and Josh Ferrer battled hard to slow the scoring rate during the middle period of the game. PJ Pusello and Escher Richter supported GK – Sam O’Toole to turn back many second half attacks. The fast run of Luke Ganino, Harry Houston, and Noah McKay worried their backs but when clear their finishing skills were lacking and getting some shots on target just didn’t happen. The 8/0 scoreline was an accurate reflection of Maribyrnong Sports Academy’s control of the game.

Footscray Hockey Club - October 31
With six schools entered our pool included Footscray City College and Belmont Secondary College.
Round 1 opponent, Footscray City defended their “D” and made our attack work hard to put our first goal, a hard strike from Ben Gray, past their defence. Second half goals from Wil Swidryk (wing) and another from a short corner strike by Ben saw a 3/0 win on the board.
Round 2 opponents Belmont struggled to keep the Strathmore pressure out as goals came quickly and often with 5 in each half. Noah Pilatti with 4 indicated his aggression in the forward 25. Wil Swidryk 2, Zane Murphy 2, Flynn Gray and Ben Gray one each hit the score line.
The final was the usual tight contest with Maribyrnong Sport Academy as both teams had their chances to score. Good defence from Anthony Pantazopoulos (GK), and Flynn Gray and Riley Smallcombe and Isaac Dukic and Max Taylor along with the leadership from Ben Gray kept our scoreline clean. An early goal from Noah Pilatti was the solitary score until the last minute when Ben Gray scored from a short corner on the final whistle.
