State Hockey Finals
Year 8 Monday 14 November
On an overcast and wet morning 16 Year 8 boys travelled to Footscray to compete in the State Hockey Finals. Hugh Snowden led the boys through an extensive warm up to take on Kooweerup in a delayed start. After a scoreless first half Harry Houston, Jai Murphy and James Byrne put 3 in the net for a dominant finish to round 1. Our second opponent, Camberwell, controlled the tempo of the match, preventing us from clearing the ball from our backline, and taking a 2 goal lead into half time. They continue to pressure us and finish with a 5/0 win in an impressive performance.
We regroup a little for the third round against Chairo Christian College and although conceding 2 early goals we compete well with goals to James & Harry again to go down 2/3 in close match. Lewis Chatzopoulos goal keept well in all matches having some heavy work to do in rounds 2 & 3. Our backs led by Paul Dounias and Rom Marwick held up well all day against some strong opposition. Geordie Hollis played forward and back depending on the demands of the match and led very well.
Thanks to Hugh Snowden for his leadership and coaching on the day.
Year 7 Wednesday 16 November
A good day weather wise as 15 boys travelled to Footscray for their first State Hockey Final. A solid warm up with the boys enthusiastically working through the drills to prepare themselves for a big day.
Round 1 sees a fast opening 10 minutes as first Wil Swidryk and then Ben Gray net goals to put Frankston under pressure as we control the play to half time. A defensive second half has the ball moving between each team’s defence until we concede a soft goal close to full time – 2/1 win.
The second match brings a more confident outlook from the boys as they control a competitive encounter with Blackburn. A first half goal from Jack Pelosi is supported by Tom Goss deflecting a shot in the second to give a 2/0 result. Defensively we were sound led by Anthony Pantazopoulos in goal, and Max Taylor and Ben Gray and Riley Smallcombe supporting him.
The boys need one more win to reach the final and they do it in style with a dominating performance against Northcote to run out 5/0 winners. Such was the team’s performance that we were able to rest some key players and recoup for the final. Goal scorers Ben Gray 3, Will Swidryk & Tom Goss each 1.
The final comes quickly and Maribyrnong lead their pool for another battle similar to the Western Region finals. This time Maribyrnong score first from a series of short corners and consistent forward pressure and although the boys try hard their flair and aggression in the forward half desert them and we go down 0/1 to a superior Maribyrnong outfit.
State Runners Up at the boys first attempt was a huge effort by the 15 man squad!
