2018 - Significant Achievements and an Exciting Year
In May, the Premier of Victoria, Danny Pearson, Member for Essendon and Lizzie Blandthorn, Member for Pascoe Vale, visited the school in the wake of the announcement of a $13.8 million for a school upgrade. Work has already begun on this three-storey building which is the first stage of the school’s master plan. We look forward to its completion which will bring with it the facilities to match our teaching goals.
In November, we were also honoured by a visit from His Royal Highness, the Duke of York. His Royal Highness and the party, which included senior Education Department officials, were able to observe programs in progress and ventured onto the Mars surface. A discussion of educational issues included different ways of assessing student knowledge, methods of engaging students in mathematics learning, and the advantages of scenario-based learning. In a short speech delivered in the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) Theatre, His Royal Highness advised the students to make the best of VSSEC which he described as “well ahead of its time”, as it would build the skills they need for the future.
Our school continued its commitment to our academic program including the arts, especially music, and to a wide range of sporting activities.
The year was crowned by excellent VCE final results, including two outstanding ATARs of 99.40 and 99.10. Sixteen students achieved scores of over 95 with a further 17% of over 90 and 35% over 80.
This year has offered challenges among the successes, and occasional disappointments as well as triumphs, part and parcel of the life of a large secondary school. Once again, the school community has risen to the challenges and contributed to and celebrated the successes.
I thank you all, wish you a happy and safe holiday season, and look forward to next year with confidence and enthusiasm.
