Student Excellence Program: Supporting High-ability Students
Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Pascoe Vale Lizzie Blandthorn visited Strathmore Secondary College yesterday to announce the Student Excellence Program.
Strathmore already offers advanced subjects across the curriculum for our large number of academically able students. Under the guidance of Mr. Matthew Roberts, students demonstrated two of these subjects.
Year 9 students Luca Tasevski, Eleana Ktenas, Jackson Jusufi and Jade Leahy demonstrated the Year 9 Project Based unit CanSat.
Joshua Dawson, Mel McCabe, Mia Cardamone and Victoria Filis demonstrated the Underwater Remote Operated Vehicle unit. The Minister and Ms Blandthorn enjoyed discussing with our students more detail about their learning and the advanced subjects they are studying at Strathmore.
The funding announced will provide valuable resources to further support the development of our programs for high-ability students and in building staff expertise.

Bologna – Strathmore Exchange
For the past 7 years Strathmore Secondary College has had the pleasure of hosting Italian students from our sister school in Bologna, Italy. From the 6th to the 18th October, we had 22 students and 2 teachers take part in our Italian Exchange Program. Our Italian guests were welcomed to Melbourne and our school by our Principal, Mrs Jill English and the President of the Dante Alighieri Society, Mrs Mary Marcuccio.
The Italian students took part in Science based workshops at VSSEC, day trips to Phillip Island, the 12 Apostles and Healesville Sanctuary. Other activities included guided heritage walks through the city and gardens of Melbourne and classroom based activities here at school. All 22 students were billeted to families within our school community so they could have an opportunity to experience a typical “Australian family” lifestyle.
The program owes its success to the generosity of Strathmore parents and students who host an Italian student each year, and to the hard working and dedicated Italian teachers and VSSEC staff. Therefore, we would like to extend a warm thanks to the following families and students who made the Italian Bologna Exchange not only possible but a memorable experience for everyone involved.
A warm thanks to the following Australian Host families:
Thank You from Liceo Galvani
A big and heart felt thank you to all the families, teachers and members of staff who with their dedication, generosity, kindness and flexibility made this exchange program once more a unique experience for our students and us alike.
For most of us, it is a once in a lifetime experience and we are sure that students made the most of every single moment they spent with their host families and in class.
The lessons and workshops were all extremely engaging and thought provoking and the places we visited were simply magnificent!
Therefore, it is definitely not a good bye but simply… un arrivederci a presto!!

Year 12 Celebration Day
On Friday the 18th of October we had 12 students compete at the State Athletics Championships at Lakeside Track. Aside from some wind the weather was perfect with the sun shining all day. It was a long day for some of our athletes with their events spread from 10am to 7pm. Despite this, all of the students represented our college proud and were all competitive in each of their events.
It was the most successful State Athletics teams we have had for a long time with our school finishing 9th on the overall leader board! Our team of athletes collectively won 9 medals; 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze.
Special mention to three girls who won their events and now hold the title of State Champion in their chosen events- Amanda Williamson (90m hurdles), Katie Baynes (Triple Jump) and Maeve Bousie (High Jump).
