Homestay - International Students

The International Student Program has been running at Strathmore Secondary College for over 20 years. Students are enrolled from Years 10 - 12, ranging from 15 to 18 years of age.

We provide homestay to these students while they are enrolled at the school.  Students usually stay at the homestay for at least a year, even more. Study Abroad students may enrol at Strathmore Secondary College for 6 to 12 months.

As of January 2022, students pay $310 per week for accommodation and 3 meals a day. This money does not have to be declared on a tax return as it is considered “reimbursement” not income.

Most students come from China and Vietnam but we also enrol Study Abroad Students from Europe and South America. Homestay families can state a preference for a boy or girl, but many don’t have a preference.

There are two yearly intakes; January and July. Students arriving in January attend HUME English Language Centre for the first 2 terms (20 weeks) but Strathmore Secondary College is their host school. A small number of students who do not need to complete the 20 week English Language Course commence their studies at Strathmore Secondary College immediately.  We arrange airport pick-ups, homestay and schooling.

It is a Department of Education requirement that every homestay is visited twice a year by the school; this enables us to develop a strong relationship with all our homestay families. The Homestay families ring us whenever they have a concern that they feel they can’t handle or just need to talk about a particular issue.

Please also refer to our Homestay Guidelines which may answer many of your questions.

As well as my ongoing support for each student and homestay family, we have a Homestay Coordinator, Jan Maas, who visits every family to see the home, write up a profile and explain the program in more detail. Please note that our program includes all kinds of families and all types of homes. What matters to us is that the student has their own room and is made to feel safe and comfortable within your family.

If you would like more information or to apply as a homestay host, please contact me through the email form below.
