Big Band Gig
Thursday night finished off a very busy week for the Strathmore Musicians and a very busy and successful year for the two College Big Bands.
The venue was the Post Office Hotel in Coburg, where D13 Big Band, under the direction of Dave Palmer, began the evening at about 7.30pm with one set of great music. Where else in Melbourne that night would you have found a student Big Band, complete with harp, playing to a packed room of supportive fans? It was a first for many of the D13 players and from all accounts they had a ball!
After the D13 Big Band had “warmed up the crowd”, M1 Big Band took over to play the next two sets. Both sets had everyone tapping along and responding to the great solos taken by the musicians. Comments from parents and friends, and from the general public there, always began with the word “wow” and went along the lines of “they can really play” or “that sounds great” or “do you do this every year?”
Thanks to all students involved and to the Instrumental Music Teachers. Thanks to the teachers and family members who came along to listen and to Abe Zhang (year 11) whose Mum, Ginger, was the official photographer for the night!!
Thanks to the year 12 students: Jim Adams, Rory Annable, Nick Millman & Armando Muscat. College Principal Jill English presented these students with their Farewell to Big Band mugs.
Auditions for D13 and M1 Big Bands will be held early next term as the Big Band program runs from term 4 to term 3 the following year.
…and, yes, we will do it again next year!
