Intermediate Baseball State Finals
The team met at the usual early leave time of 7.45am but due to other school’s late withdrawals didn’t have to play their first game till 11.00am. Overnight rain had made the fields damp but not unplayable and the sunny morning allowed good conditions to prevail.
Our first opponent, Brighton Secondary College, had won their first game and were a confident team as a win against us would take them straight to the final. Their pitching and defence were strong as they converted all their defensive plays, holding us scoreless until our last innings. Good at bats from Bailey, Sean & Brodie resulted in our only run in the fifth innings. McLeod got our other safe hit.
Our battery of McLeod to Sean was sound, conceding one safe hit in 5 innings. However they picked up 8 walks, coupled with our 4 errors gave them enough scoring chances as they put 7 runs across the plate.
Connor Garvin covered good ground in our 2 man outfield.
Result : 0 - 7 loss
Our second game was against Koonung Secondary College. Bailey pitched to Brodie as Sean played first base and McLeod at short stop and Tommy at second. The defence was solid making most plays to concede 3 runs in the first 2 in the third and 1 in the last innings.
Our second inning won us the game putting 7 runs across the plate from solid hitting and aggressive running. We backed up with another in the third to run out 8/6 winners and second place in our pool to Brighton, who won the final beating Maribyrnong. Good hitting from McLeod 1, Bailey 1, Sean 2, Brodie 1, Peter 1, Anders 1, led our offense. Bailey restricted them to 4 hits and only conceded 3 walks in 4 innings pitched and 6 runs.
A good effort by the team to acquit themselves well against solid opposition.
Sean Goodman (C), McLeod Sell, Bailey Marcola, Brodie Wise, Peter Cook, Connor Garvin, Anders Lyche, Tommy Karagiannis.
