State Final – Intermediate Baseball
Wednesday 30 May – Cheltenham Baseball Club
A squad of 11 boys left Strathmore at 7.50am for the long trip across town, made even longer by a bus driver who wanted to see the city in peak hour traffic!
A late arrival saw us go straight into a game with Wantirna College. A slow start defensively saw us drop behind 0/5, through a series of walks. Our offense stepped up to drive in 15 runs over 3 innings to run out 15/6 winners. Leading hitter was Wil Swidryk 3, McLeod Sell, Connor Garvin & Ben Haste with 1.
Game 2 was the challenge for the day as Parkdale was the school that knocked us out of last year’s competition. A good first innings hit by Brodie Wise set up a run scoring situation but our next hitters came up short. We threatened in each innings but couldn’t bunch hits together. Meanwhile McLeod threw well for 4 innings but their 5 runs in the second innings proved decisive as the final score was 0-7. Hits to Brodie (double) Jack Warrick and Patrick Logan.
Game 3 saw another decisive win over Drouin 15/0. Excellent pitching from Connor and McLeod saw only 4 batters reach base safely while striking out 7. Our best hitters were McLeod 2, Will 3, Peter Cook 2.
A 2/1 win loss record wasn’t sufficient to play in the final. Parkdale won the final so we were competitive against the best side in the competition.
