60th Anniversary Celebrations
The first function for the 60th Anniversary of the College was held on Wednesday 22nd March. A portrait of our first principal, Mr Kenneth McGregor, was unveiled by his family who flew in from Queensland. Another portrait of Principal Neil Baudinette was presented by Yolanda De Santis, Dux of 1977. Yolanda spoke of her love of her time at Strathmore during the 10-year Baudinette era, entertaining the audience not only with her memories but also with her modelling of her cooking apron made in sewing, her sports uniform and her school uniform. The College's first librarian, Edith Pamment, unveiled our new College banner and photos of Glamis Castle, sent to us by Lord Strathmore. Around 90 former students and friends attended, and it was particularly exciting for us to have three generations of the Baudinette family present, including Neil himself; we would like to recognise and thank the Baudinette’s for their dedication and continued involvement in the College.
The major feature of the evening was the unveiling of an Honour Board recognising eleven former students who were conscripted into the army and served in the Vietnam War. Ron Hall addressed the audience on his thoughts and experiences. Of the eleven, we had 6 in attendance at the function; 2 of the men have since passed away. It was an emotional time as one of the widows and former student herself, Kay Carey nee Beecroft, unveiled the Honour Board, together with her son and grandson.
After the unveiling ceremony, we all adjourned to the Victorian Space Science Centre for an evening 'stroll on Mars' and light refreshments.
Parents will see the new portraits, Honour Boards and new College banner when you visit the General Office.
Our other two functions will be a staff reunion and recognition of teachers who have served the Strathmore Community with long service on Wednesday, 30th August and a whole-College Reunion and Open Day on Sunday, 15th October. We look forward to seeing you there!
