The College had a pleasure of hosting our sister school Akaigawa Junior High from Hokkaido, Japan in August. The students were well looked after by our students and host families, enjoyed the excursion to Healesville and classroom integration.
A special thanks to the kind and generous families who hosted the Akaigawa group. It was an excellent exchange program.
My experience with the homestay exchange was extremely enriching, and equally rewarding. Over the 6 days of the program, my homestay brother Haruto and I managed to experience many parts of a more contemporary Australian youths life. He was given the opportunity to come along to a Friday night volleyball game, a friends birthday party, and we even had a barbecue at around the middle of his stay. In addition to this, during the week he was given the opportunity to spend time in regular classes at the school, which I hope was beneficial to his learning experience. I hope his experiences of Australian life and culture were as rewarding and interesting as the perspectives on the language I gained from him.
To experience both sides of the relationship between our two schools, and from that being given the opportunity to experience an entirely new cultural experience surrounding schooling was incredible. I hope that Haruto gained a similar insight into another system of schooling. The effort taken by the staff to allow this exchange to happen was enormous, so I can’t extend my thanks enough for this chance. I eagerly await for my opportunity to do this program again next year.
