YEAR 7 PROGRAM

Once a student has been selected to attend Strathmore Secondary College, staff representatives visit that child's Primary School to discuss the student with their Grade 6 teacher. We test all incoming Year 7 students to determine their Maths, English comprehension and spelling level, and many students are tested in reading. We believe this process allows for a smoother transition between Primary and Secondary School.

All Year 7 students must study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and Personal & Physical Development (PPD) and can choose three of the Individual Program Units below per semester. However, it is compulsory for students to study one language for the entire year. There is an Enrichment English Unit for students with high ability in English. Recommendations for this unit are based on comprehension test results and information from the student's Primary School teacher. Direct Instruction in Maths, Spelling and Reading are offered to students who have been selected for support programs based on their Grade 6 teacher assessment and test results.

In Personal & Physical Development, students will study Physical Education, Food & Health and Health Education. Strathmore Secondary College offers the option for students to choose a single sex or co-ed class for all PPD activities. As part of the PPD subject, all students participate in Human Relations classes. In this program students discuss self esteem, bullying, friendships, grief and issues relevant to adolescence.
