Visiting Performers: Venice in Love
On Friday afternoon, the year 7, 8 and 9 Drama and Theatre Sports students were lucky enough to watch an entertaining performance from a visiting theatre company, “Make A Scene.”
The play was in the Italian comedy theatre style of Commedia Dell’Arte, which uses stock characters, masks and physical comedy. The students watched as the two performers played various characters who took them to the world of 16th Century Venice at the height of Carnevale celebrations. The over the top character of Il Capitano desperate to win the heart of the maid Isabella, the old mistress, Pantalona's daughter, resorts to using a love potion. When the wrong people drink it chaos and misunderstanding ensues!
The students were able to take part in the performance, volunteers getting up on stage to join in the action, and the audience responding and providing suggestions in the style of Commedia Dell’Arte.
