Senior Hockey - State Final, August 22
A Squad of 14 travelled to Footscray to contest the Senior State Hockey Finals. Our pool was tough with Warrnambool and Mildura considered chances to contest the final. Our start against Warrnambool was confident but on one of their few attacks they put a goal past Jess. The game was played mainly in the mid field and our attacking half but we couldn’t put a goal on the scoresheet. A late goal meant a final score of 0/2 to Warrnambool.
Round 2 was Mildura, who had won 7/1 against Brunswick in their opening match. A good start saw Ryan McConnell finish off a strong attack with a goal in the top corner. Their quick midfield capitalised on a couple of chances to lead 2/1 at half time. The second half was close again until Hugh Snowden was sent off, and their short corner conversions saw a final score of 1/5.
The final round was a one sided match against Brunswick with a score line of 7/1 indicating our dominance. Highlights were Ollie’s last goal in the top corner – goal of the day material. Also Sienna played centre half for the second half and displayed her poise and skills.
A good day but just short of some strong opponents.
Thanks to the team and Hugh Snowden (Captain)
Senior Hockey - Western Metropolitan Region Finals
A depleted squad of 10 boys and 1 girl made their way to Footscray Hockey club to represent Strathmore in the WMR finals.
With only 3 teams entered we played Suzanne Corey Secondary College first and controlled the game with good ball movement but failed to put our dominance of play on the scoreboard to run out 4/0 winners.
Luke Smith 2, Jed Snowden & Sam Dukic were our goal scorers.
After Maribyrnong Sports Academy (MSA) won 4/0 over Suzanne Corey Secondary College, we faced up to MSA with the victor going on to State Finals. An early goal to Hugh Snowden was answered by a MSA short corner conversion to find us 1/1 at half time. Although creating good scoring chances, we could not net the winner, and at full time, it was still 1/1.
With extra time applied to get a result, neither team could get the decisive goal. Penalty flicks was next on the list and after five shots, the teams were still tied three goals each. The final means of getting a result was “golden goal” flicks and Jed Snowden put in the decider while their shooter hit his shot into the post completing a tense final 4/3 Strathmore win.
Goal scores – Hugh Snowden 1, Luke Smith 1, Jed Snowden 2
The team created some important decisions to decide that Sienna Thurlow-Cole would be welcomed into the playing ranks as her team was withdrawn from the girl’s competition due to clashes with other sports finals. Although unsure whether this would cause our results to be reversed, they welcomed Sienna on board and her strong play contributed to our success.
The State Finals will be a challenge but this team has already achieved results and levels of sportsmanship of which they can be proud.
Team members – Hugh Snowden (Captain), Seb Rossi (injured), Ben Hollis, Luke Smith, Sean Callander (ill), Ryan McConnell, Jess Weightman, Matt Byrne (injured), Sienna Thurlow-Cole, Oliver Nicholas, Sam Dukic, Nick Curtis, Lachlan Curtis and Jed Snowden.
