PRINCIPAL'S WELCOME

The Strathmore Secondary College motto is 'Palladem Alite', nurture or cherish wisdom. The phrase, taken from one of Ovid's stories summarizes the lessons learnt by the central character. Wisdom has a deeper significance than learning or the mere acquisition of facts. It is knowledge applied to life and living. The founders of the College were committed to dedicating its work to more than mere learning and recognised the danger of learning becoming purely academic and detached from life.

With this objective in mind the College seeks to foster the intellectual growth of students, develop their self esteem and promote the personal qualities of responsibility and cooperation. It is also important that the College display and reinforce the shared values of its community - tolerance, respect, excellence, care and honesty.

The College approaches this task on a variety of fronts.

It offers a broad range of curriculum choices within a supportive learning environment that recognises and cares for individual students and groups of students.

For many years the College has adopted a team structure in which students belong to groups small enough to provide a strong sense of continuity and identity. This approach fosters greater personal contact, communication and discussion between the College, students and their families.

Academically, the College is large enough to provide all students with access to a comprehensive range of studies. Students in Years 7 to 10 have access to a broad program that is carefully structured to provide breadth of study together with the opportunity to be extended and challenged.

In the senior years a wide range of VCE studies, together with our focus on achievement and success, enables students to proceed to a variety of post school options.

To complement the formal learning program the College encourages student participation in a wide range of extra curricula activities. We offer students extensive involvement in areas such as sport, performing arts, public speaking and subject challenges and competitions.

Strathmore is proud of, and maintains, its traditions. These include the College's atmosphere of good conduct and discipline; the fact that students feel safe and supported within the College; the strong support for, and pride in, wearing the College uniform; our encouragement of achievement and the development within students of a sense of personal worth and of identification with the College.

Strathmore's on-going success reflects the strong support of parents and the sustained commitment and involvement of staff.

It is our clear intention to maintain that support and commitment as the College evolves and continues its task of providing an environment for young people where learning and individuals are valued.
