In Amiens, we spent a lot of time visiting different museums, galleries and memorials dedicated to the Western Front. One place I particularly enjoyed visiting in the Somme was an area where the trenches have been left to nature, unchanged since the end of WW1. As the sun shone down on us, standing between large mounds of earth covered with rich green grass it was hard to imagine that young men were living in the very same place for months at a time, standing knee deep in water, feet rotting but determination springing eternally. It’s hard to explain just how peaceful it was standing there; listening to birds chirping and singing and watching bees and butterflies flitting from one flower to another. For that peace I would like to say thank you.
