Extension Programs

Academic achievement is a primary goal of the College. This requires that all students have access to high quality curriculum that is well taught, closely monitored and supports student learning. It also requires flexibility and the development of arrangements based on achievement data gathered from students.

Rather than having a particular group receiving extension across all subjects we target our extension program on groups of students within individual subject areas in light of data collected. Before students join us in Year 7 they complete a series of ACER (Australian Centre for Education Research) tests which enable us to identify students who will benefit from extension studies in Mathematics and/or English. In Years 8 and 9 achievement data is used to also identify students who require extension in Science and History.

When students move to Year 10 they are able to join our Year 11 students in VCE studies. Year 11 students are able to join our Year 12 classes.

As well as extension classes we provide support programs for student in literacy and mathematics.

Special Needs Students

Strathmore Secondary College is committed to providing all students with access to the highest quality educational opportunities.

Special Needs Program Coordinator and Chaplain, Rory Chambers, together with our Integration Aides provide support and develop specific programs to assist students with special needs.

Our Special Needs Program aims to:
  • Enhance the student’s self esteem, worth and dignity.
  • Encourage interaction and socialisation with peers.
  • Provide access to a curriculum which offers a range of opportunities for individualised and group learning and the development of skills, knowledge and values.
  • Offer students the fullest opportunity to participate in regular class activities. This may involve some program modification. At other times, the PSG may decide a student requires an intense modified program which may require withdrawal from the classroom. Student reporting reflects this modification and aims to acknowledge student progress.

Extra Curricular Activities

Extra Curricular Activities are important for the stimulation and personal growth of our students. We provide an extensive range of activities for students of all interests and abilities. Students can join debating and public speaking competitions, join the College Choir, contribute to the College magazine or be involved in leadership activities to mention just a few of the opportunities available.

A combined Year 7 and 8 camp is held at the start of each year in team groups as an important part of the Year 7 transition process. Student teams also run interstate camps for Years 9 and 10 students. Subject areas such as Music, Science and Physical Education run curriculum based camps.

Students are able to take part in a wide range of international excursions. We run language study tours to Japan and Italy; the Arts area run Theatre Study tours to New York and Visual Arts tours to France; Science run our space academy camp in the United States; our students have been involved in community development programs in India and Borneo.
