ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
Students learn and absorb information at different rates and in different ways. This can result in some students requiring extra assistance.
Strathmore aims to provide as much support as possible to enhance a student's learning. Intensive reading and spelling programs, as part of the Literacy Support Program, are provided to students who require assistance in these areas from Years 7-10.
Direct Instruction classes are offered to Year 7 students who have been identified as needing support in Maths. This is an intensive year long subject to prepare those students for mainstream Year 8 maths.
English as a Second Language (ESL Program)
The College has developed a number of programs to support students who speak English as a second language. These include:
- Timetabled ESL classes (including Year 11 and 12)
- Small group tuition for all students identified as requiring ESL
assistance
- Additional individual support for some ESL students
- Mainstream English classes for advanced ESL students
- Teacher aide support for new students in a variety of subjects
- Integration Program
Strathmore Secondary College is committed to providing all students with disabilities and impairments access to the highest quality educational opportunities.
Special Needs Program Co-ordinator, Robyn Thomson, together with our Integration Aides provide support and develop specific programs to assist students with special needs.
Our Integration Program aims to:
- Enhance the students' self esteem, worth and dignity
- Encourage the students' interaction and socialisation with peers to the
mutual advantage of both
- Provide access to a curriculum which supplies a range of opportunities
for individualised and group learning skills, knowledge and attitudes
- Offer students the fullest opportunity to participate in the college
curriculum and regular class activities. This may involve program
modification with the ultimate goal of enabling all students to participate
as much as possible. In some cases, in order to enhance a student's ultimate
ability to be an independent member of the community, the PSG may decide a
student requires an intense modified program which may require withdrawal
from the classroom. Reports need to be specially written to give details of
the modification and the student's progress.
The college provides a specially constructed space for use by students who require the assistance of an Integration Aide.
